What do you think about sending evening emails during the week when 15-35 year olds are chatting on MSN, for example? When you're chatting with friends, you're relaxed and excited to check out a new message (maybe it's from a friend?) Perhaps after school and working hours, people are more available to act upon the offer and the evening is a way to reach them right when they're online.
A side thought:
This is where I would see a Facebook email campaign very effective. Everyone checks when they have a (1) while they're engaged in other activities within Facebook, no? Plus there's less competing spam.
For the brand and estore Business Pages that attract Fans, it would be great to integrate options for permission-based Facebook messages and notifications.

You talked about pinging and whether people get excited about it or not.
