@ Ann D

Interesting. Perhaps a newspaper article would be an effective method of increasing consumer education ;-)

I think consumer education needs to be another important piece of the puzzle. A recent study (Ipsos 2006) indicated that consumers consider online reviews to be their second-most influential source of purchasing information, second only to newspaper articles. If online customer reviews are being given this kind of weight by the online consumer, that online consumer needs to be educated about the types of online review fraud that have been perpetuated in the past (and that still run rampant on some sites); and then he/she needs to be armed with the tools needed to critically evaluate online reviews for himself/herself. Without that information, the consumer loses, the manufacturers of legitimate products lose, and the ecommerce site loses (as frustrated consumers move on).

Hey Linda, Well put. Sorting out the chaff from the wheat can be tricky so we at PowerReviews have a Verified Buyer program where retailers close the loop with their users so that when a user writes a review through our proprietary process we can validate that that person purchased that product (was that a run-on sentence or what!). On buzzillions.com, we mark those reviews as Verified Buyers. Hope that helps the next time you're looking for reliable reviews. eBags.com also marks reviews as by people who own the product.
