I am working on redesigning my home page a bit now.

I am planning on adding a top rated/reviewed section right below my daily featured section on my home page.

In this section i plan to have the 3 highest rated products listed.

What should I call this section? Any ideas???

I have just finished my category pages redesign and added item pages. YEA.....

I also added links to new added pages, “Top Sellers” “What's New” and “Clearance”. Jason had a suggestion, I thought good so I used it.

I would really love to hear what you think my biggest weaknesses are now.

I also just add item pages to the site as well, any feedback on them is welcome also.

thanks.........

Hi Mendy,

I have not reviewed "Waiting for Your Cat to Bark" or "Call to Action" on this blog, but I will review "Always Be Testing" and I understand it is on its way.

Great timing on this article, as we're working on a client project where we will be employing the ultra-simplistic form of a homepage design. The combination of their product line, their market, and the website visitors (along with some historical data to draw these conclusions from) indicate that users know what they're looking for before they come to the site - and they're not really browsing per se. The homepage is designed to accommodate those behaviors.

But, in general, I see a lot of merchants having a hard time focusing on just a few items on the homepage because they sell so many products, that they want to communicate all of that to the visitors, while many don't realize they're overloading them. Our rule of thumb, have a max of three main areas of focus on the homepage - and incorporate a design that will emphasize accordingly.

Linda,

Amazon just informed me that the book "always be testing" is shippping early.

Did you review "waiting for your cat to bark"? I did not think it was as good as "call to action".

The differences in quality between these two sites is amazing. Thank you for writing such an in-depth and organized discussion of the problems on the Source website. I am in the process of a major redesign on one of my own sites, and have that "too close to the subject matter" feeling. This should help tremendously.

Very good analysis and article Linda - thank you. Valuable - the first impression is always the lasting impression. I have never had the time to focus on how a good web site / page should look and behave - just know what frustrates me. This is a valuable service you are providing! Keep it up.

@Audio Bible and Mendy,

Bryan Eisenberg, John Quarto-vonTivadar, Lisa T. Davis (From Future Now) have another book called "Always Be Testing" (I'll be reviewing it soon on Get Elastic)

I would highly suggest, Audio Bible, that you come up with 3 radically different designs for your calls to action of New Products, Top Sellers and Clearance. You can glean inspiration from competitor sites or other online retailers, and then run an a/b/c split test with Google Website Optimizer. That's the best way to determine what's going to work best for your site and customers.

I say to try radically different designs because once you find a clear winner, you can make micro-adjustments to further improve the design in additional testing runs.
