I've always found a greater text-to-image ratio works well - many spammers use just images to circumnavigate spam checks on blocked words so legit emails could be caught up this way.

Some good tips there. I always try to unsubscribe before I start marking messages as spam, but it's up to the company sending the message to make that possible -- by having a working, user-friendly way to unsubscribe, that removes that person's email address immediately. I build custom mailing list applications for many of my clients and there are some great tips for me to take away from this. I recently caught on to the importance of List Hygiene and have added a custom bounce management component to my application.

This is a very useful post Linda. Granted, email marketing isn't necessarily the top dog that it used to be, but it is a proven (and cost efficient) way to communicate with your customers.
I wrote a similar post a couple of months back about "Lazy Email Marketing":
http://kzimmerman.typepad.com/background_noise/2008/11/lazy-email-marketing.html
In the end, I think that's what this boils down to: a lazy approach. Too many retailers go through the motions and simply hand off their email marketing efforts to a 3rd party. I'd like to see more retailers take control of these campaigns and really try to make them more effective!

Great post, Linda.
