It just seems more welcoming placing a face with someone you are conversing with. A brand logo would work as well to give brand association. I never really thought about the importance of an avatar. It seems like consistency of avatar usage is important is so you can be identified. Having a different one was each blog or whatever won't allow your followers to make a connection.
