My issue is with auto-focus. When sites (besides the Google homepage where all you do is search) place your cursor in the search box automatically, it prevents keyboard scrolling. Grr. Find the mouse, click off the search box, resume browsing. Don't do it!

@Audio Bible,

I think your search box looks good. I personally prefer boxes without text but I don't think it's a major issue. Blinking cursors in the box are more annoying according to some *ahem, Jason* :)

I think my search box is in pretty good shape.

But I have thought of lengthening it a bit and removing the text inside the search box saying 'enter keyword or phase'. I am not sure this will be more effective or just more tweaking?

Any opinion on this?

I really like that analogy of the salesperson out on the floor at a retail store (warning: I may steal it :) ). If you want to browse and the salesperson is too aggressive, you get turned off, but if you need to talk to someone and there's no one to be found, you get irritated and leave. Onsite search is a lot like that, and balancing the two kinds of shoppers isn't easy.

Check out byggmax.se, it's a hardware retail site. Unfortunately only available in Swedish but still relevant, since it has an extremely direct approach to display its products.
