Looking into the future, I believe the majority of retailers will sell mainstream products at the same price. The difference in the future is that more manufacturers are also opening up shop to sell directly to the customer & becoming your competition. (Callaway Golf, great example, actually fulfills their direct orders from the very retailers that have inventory and take a cut). The vendor should have the greatest profit margin and eventually find a way to give the customer top notch service.

I like to ask my client's the question, why should a complete stranger buy from you instead of direct from the manufacturer or your top competitor?

Oh i think Price Matching is one of the best strategies a business could take, and its fairly easy to implement. If there's one thing all perspective customers have in common, its the desire to get what there after for as cheep as possible if you offer a superior product at the same price as an inferior one you can't lose provided your costs are too high, if there are maybe its time to re-valuate and make some compromises.

I've never really thought of price matching as a marketing strategy either, but it could work.

I've never really considered price matching as a marketing strategy before. The cons that you point out, however, do seem to outweigh the pros. I am especially concerned with the point that price matching involves the customer searching around for the lowest price - and that could easily involve losing a customer to a competitive store. Price matching doesn't seem to be a valuable marketing strategy.
