If it costs too much, make it come out of the marketing budget - cut the radio ads.
Imagine if people like Linda got that call - wouldn't they be more likely to use Amazon next Christmas? Or their nephew's birthday? Or for valentines day? Or mothers day?
Or for all their online purchases?
What would have more impact - that 1 minute phone call or listening to some dumb ad on the radio 10 times?

A call like this is well worth it. If staffing is a problem for online retailers, this might be a cheaper solution, although I don't know much about these kinds of systems.

Yep, even automated calls, though creepy, are appreciated. Not only will a phone call better get you the information on the delayed order, but Amazon or Indigo or anyone else can use that phone conversation to better retain the order.

This is an excellent point. Plus, I had an expired credit card number on my one-click and the email reached me FOUR hours later.
Honestly, a robot voice calling to tell me to check my Amazon order would have been helpful.
