Perhaps some things can be learnt from its no-frills, intuitive user interface.

One of the best visual search websites that I use is PicClick.com. I have to say that I can be very visual too and photos are very important especially if I want the item.

People are very visual and a sample or a photo of something you are selling is worth it. Visual search for online retail sites is indeed still rare even though it has been around for years and, if implemented right, is a fantastic complement to textual search and category navigation. I work at a company - LTU technologies - that develops image recognition tools including similarity search, image matching and color extraction/search for eCommerce and mobile retail applications. These tools allow retailers to provide rich online shopping experiences while automating recommendations, color palettes etc. Image recognition is simple to integrate and from our experience has a direct impact. One of our clients - a large European shopping portal - has reported that their users stay 2-3 times longer on the site than before they had visual search and are 25% more like to click-through to purchase. Image recognition presents a fantastic opportunity to create unique shopping experiences and throw mobile into the mix, you can start to really bridge the gap between offline and online shopping.

Great post.
