@Kevin Chamberlin - actually secretly I'm a victoria secret's model, but don't tell ;) On a more serious note though, you are absolutely right in that no optimization project is complete without testing. In order to maximize the results of any optimization initiative online, testing is the most effective way to do so. Thanks for all the great comments!

Ayat, nice article I would like to add one thing, or actually emphasize more than the small bit you gave it at the end of this article last paragraph last sentence "However, if you are able to increase average order size by understand what appeals to your site visitor through optimization and TESTING, cross-selling is a great way to accomplish that."
is to TEST TEST and TEST for yourself. I have used cross selling and or up selling for a few years with my clients. And you mentioned that yes online shoppers are getting more and more comfortable with them. Another option could be sending abandon cart emails to those who have abandon their carts. About 2.5 years ago we started doing this at a company I worked for that only worked with catalog companies and the return was 75% of abandon cart visitors placed and order. Again this was before Google Analytics and Q4 (/4q.iperceptions.com) which allows you to get feed back from visitors on their visit for free. As for Victoria's site I am sure they will remove that obnoxious pop up when the data comes back but nice to see you shop there. ;-)

@The Software Guy - Amazon is always cutting edge when it comes to ecommerce optimization. Many times they test with various techniques to see what works best for their particular products and consumers. What may work well with electronics, may not be as successful with apparel. Amazon's Better Together Upsell is very strategic in that it is a complimentary item that would enhance what the user currently has. Based on my experience those types of upsells are a relief to customers who may not have all the accessories for their new digital camera, for example, and they really don't want to search for those items either. Lancome.com utilizes a similar strategy.

Interesting points, particularly about the danger of cross selling during the checkout process.

Would like to see your thoughts about Amazon's "Better Together" upsell.

Great post, some really interesting pointers. I think it might be useful to allow "similar products" at basket/checkout to be directly added to the basket, rather than forcing the user to go and view the product page first.
