Should my organization invest in a microservices architecture? [UPDATED]

The number of emerging new touchpoints through which businesses engage costumers is growing at a rapid pace. New business models are evolving and as exciting as that may be, there is a lot of disruption flowing as business and IT systems become more complex.

Brands and retailers are able to adapt quickly to consumer-driven expectations with a microservices architecture when it comes to digital commerce.

Legacy commerce systems aren’t positioned to alleviate this rapid change as they were initially built to deliver a webstore-only experience and are very limited in how they support new channels. The monoliths that are in use today are tightly coupled systems that often lack API layers to enable quick touchpoint onboarding and business logic unifications across channels. 

Due to this lack of flexibility and scalability, organizations often look to new commerce solutions that offer an API-first strategy and a microservices architecture as their saving grace. But does that make sense for all organizations?
